Happy Independence Day from George Washington's Mount Vernon

Weekly Growth Tip 🚀

Meet Sergeant First Class (SFC) Donald Paul Francisco History Interpreter & The Resident Fifer at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

Today, as we commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we take a moment to reflect upon the sacrifices made by those before us, whose courage and perseverance made it possible for us to live freely in a nation unbound by tyranny.

In these hallowed annals of our history, few figures loom larger than General George Washington, whose military and political leadership were instrumental in securing America's independence. As I honor this historic day, it is in the spirit of Washington's legacy that I wish to express my gratitude for the service of our veterans, who continue to embody the ideals for which Washington stood.

One such patriot who personifies these ideals is Sergeant First Class (SFC) Donald Paul Francisco, U.S. Army, Retired. Born and raised in New Orleans, LA, SFC Francisco enlisted in the U.S. Army in the summer of 1983, embarking on a distinguished career that spanned three decades. From the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, VA, to the 5th Infantry Division Band in Fort Polk, LA, and the 8th US Army Band in Seoul, South Korea, SFC Francisco served with dedication and honor, retiring from active duty with the US Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.

Yet, the story of his service did not end there. He carried forward his commitment to our nation's history and culture by becoming a History Interpreter & The Resident Fifer at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. This historic site, much like the land we celebrate today, is steeped in the history of men and women, both free and enslaved, who contributed to the birth of our nation.

In his role, SFC Francisco continues to educate and inspire, teaching us about George Washington, his family, and the Mount Vernon community. Just as crucially, he shares the stories of individuals like Frank and William Lee, enslaved brothers who were part of Washington's household. Their experiences, and those of many others, remind us that the struggle for freedom has many faces and narratives.

The music that SFC Francisco creates, spanning genres from gospel to classical to folk, captures the rich tapestry of our shared history. Much as it did during the American Revolution, music serves as a crucial line of communication, a source of comfort, and a beacon of inspiration.

Today, as we celebrate our nation's independence, let us honor and remember the men and women like SFC Francisco who have dedicated their lives to upholding the ideals that bind us together as a nation. It is through their stories that the spirit of George Washington's legacy - and that of many others who have served this country - continues to live on.

Wishing you all a happy and reflective Independence Day. Kevin Box, Fuel Your Growth 🚀
